Understanding

Understanding is totally different from knowledge. Knowledge is borrowed, understanding is your own. Knowledge comes from without, understanding wells up from within. Knowledge is ugly, because it is secondhand. And knowledge can never become part of your being. It will remain alien, it will remain foreign, it cannot put down roots inside you.

Understanding grows out of you, it is your own flowering. It is authentically yours; so it has beauty, and it liberates.

Yet of course, the reason why you want to understand is a whole other issue.

I believe that knowledge and understanding have a symbiotic relationship with one another. Perhaps we know with our minds and understand with our hearts.

will:

The difference between the two is

  1. Knowledge is hearsay and is therefore inadmissible in the Court of Life

  2. Understanding is organic and edible. You can live and thrive upon it.

this reminds me of a conversation i had last week, about how some people can be so very very clever (knowledge) whilst at the same time, pretty stupid (understanding)

and then, of course, theres also wisdom...
